NEW TO ALBERTA

Apply for or Update your Health Care

You are eligible for Alberta Health Care coverage if you are:

  • Legally entitled to be in Canada and plan on making Alberta your permanent home
  • Will be present in Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12-month period
  • Are not claiming residency or benefits from another province territory or country
  • Are not a tourist or visitor to Alberta (Look here to check if you are considered a temporary resident:)

Requirements:

a) Legal Entitlement:

  • Canadian Passport (Expired passport is acceptable)
  • Canadian Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship Certificate/Card
  • Permanent Resident card
  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence (signature of Immigration officer is required electronic or original)
  • Federal ID Card (RCMP, First Nations/Inuit, Department of National Defense)

b) Canada Entry Documents:

  • Work Permit (Alberta/Open) if the location is for another province, proof of employment in Alberta is required.
  • Study Permit (Alberta): A study permit from another province is not acceptable.
  • Municipal/territorial/provincial police force identification

c) Proof of Residency:

  • Valid Alberta ID card or Driver’s Licence (current address)
  • Bank Statement/Phone bills (The document must be mailed to you and should be dated within the last 90 days.)
  • Lease/Rental Agreement
  • Property tax Bill/Land Title
  • Mortgage Documents
  • Tenant Insurance/Vehicle registration (AB)

d) Proof of Photo Identification:

  • Passport
  • Driver Licence
  • ID Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Permanent Resident card
  • Federal ID Card (RCMP, First Nations/Inuit, Department of National Defense)

If you are eligible, you will need to complete the Application for AHCIP Coverage.This is available at the New Urban Registry or can be found online at https://cfr.forms.gov.ab.ca/form/AHC0102

To successfully apply for Alberta Health Care, you must visit the Alberta Registry with your required documents.

If you submit in person, your processing time is 2-5 days.If you choose to mail in your application, the processing can take up to six weeks
